Clemens HOLTZBRÜCK

Born 1970
Lives and works in Vienna (AUT).

“Like imagination and unlike film, a picture has no beginning and no end

Photographer: A Teaser Out Of Thought by Dr Frederick Baker, Cambridge

Clemens Holtzbrück´s photography is built on an essential tension. The frame is clear, the content ambiguous. His framing is a clear act of artistic will, his content is an equally clear invitation to audience interpretation. If the medium is the message, than the message of Holtzbrück´s medium is that the message is hidden.

In his "Ode on a grecian Urn", the Romantic English poet John Keats said of an ancient Greek Vase he saw in the British Museum "dost tease us out of thought", and so do Holtzbrück´s images. They tease us with clues of half seen things. So that our imaginations tease out their own interpretations, or search to discover his.

Holtzbrück is however a modest man, who shrinks from simplifications. Shadowing him is not easy, but rewarding.

In this sense his work is aligned to the Fluxus work of Yoko Ono and her half made pieces, which root in the long Zen Japanese tradition of Art. Minimalism as a trigger for maximum clarity in imaginative engagement, if not meditation. The Zen rock garden is the physical embodiment of this praxis and Holtzbrück replaces the grains of sand with pixels and the rocks with blocks of colour and form.

So it is that Rothko comes to mind, but Holtzbrück´s work is the product of the digital instant, not hours of laborious paint work. Yet in his aesthetic Holtzbrück´s oeuvre reminds us that in the photograph can pay homage to slow time and not just the temporal instant, celebrated by lomos and the polaroids.

Time is something one should have with his images. Time to excavate and go below the surface on a journey to who knows where. A journey for which Holtzbrück is not the guide, but the gatekeeper, whose photographs make an invitation, with the qualities of humility, curiosity and intelligence which he very much makes his own.
